Barbara Koffman Scholarship

Barbara Koffman
Barbara Koffman

Barbara Koffman was a born educator and leader in education, especially among her peers and fellow reading clinicians. She was passionate about helping children learn which was facilitated through her insightful assessments about a child’s potential. Barbara’s ability to create reports that made sense to teachers was forged during her years in the classroom. This fact was demonstrated when she modeled best practice strategies with students for a teacher. Barbara knew well how to make a complicated learning plan for a student appear doable, relevant and logical for the classroom teacher. Besides working on a one on one level with children, Barbara presented insightful and relevant in-services for teachers from across the province. She remained engaged with up to date research that benefited student progress. Barbara always supported a balanced approach to learning. Parents also benefited from her expertise as she explained their child’s learning issues and provided a sense of hope through a plan of action that also involved them. On the personal side, Barbara’s wonderful sense of humour could lighten up even the darkest of moments. The successful recipient of her annual scholarship is chosen with the expectation that he/she will develop some of these same characteristics so that more students can experience the joy of reading and learning.
